Franklin Avenue Bridge

Metropolitan Design Center, 2012

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is undertaking a multi-year rebuild of the I-35W corridor through the city of Minneapolis, including rebuilding many of the bridge overpasses.  The interstate system created a rift between many established Minneapolis neighborhoods and the rebuilding of the bridges between them offers a chance to create more robust connections across the highway to reconnect communities.  In 2012 the Metropolitan Design Center partnered with local housing developers and planners to propose a radical new design for the Franklin Avenue bridge in order to revitalize part of South Minneapolis that has been struggling to reconnect with the rest of the city ever since the interstate went in.

Aspects of the design have been incorporated by MnDOT planners and are currently under construction.
