Accessory Dwelling Unit Ordinance
City Minneapolis, 2015
In 2014, Minneapolis City Council Member Lisa Bender introduced intent to legalize accessory dwelling units, or "granny flats" in the City of Minneapolis. As an urban designer I was engaged to help design the regulatory standards around A.D.U.'s and to develop engagement tools for helping the public understand the different types of A.D.U.'s and their implementation. Public support for the ordinance was overwhelmingly positive thanks in part to the clarity of the regulation and the outreach effort. The ordinance was formally adopted by the Minneapolis City Council in 2015, and since that date the city has seen the implementation of over 100 licensed accessory dwelling units.
