University District Urban Design Framework Plan

Metropolitan Design Center, 2013

full report

The University District Alliance is a non-profit entity representing the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the University of Minnesota, as well as the University's Office of Community Relations.  In 2014 the group contracted with the Metropolitan Design Center to develop an urban design framework plan to help guide public and private investment in and around the University campus in order to maximize quality of life and meet sustainability goals.  The framework plan proposed a network of open spaces and greenways to provide new transportation and recreation activities and a focus on the Mississippi River and its many restorative plant communities.  The plan also addressed the issue of water management, a challenge for an area that was formerly a wetland, and recommended strategies for protecting the quality of the river and other remnant wetlands in the area.
