Granary Greenway

Metropolitan Design Center, 2011

Granary Road was an obsolete rail corridor that formerly serviced the University of Minnesota coal steam power plant.  In 2010 the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Transportation planned to turn the corridor into a truck route.  As an Urban Designer with the Metropolitan Design Center we partnered with the local community group to propose a pedestrian and bicycle greenway as an alternative.  The idea and design proposal were compelling enough that the City of Minneapolis partnered with the University of Minnesota to implement the greenway in 2014.  The project is currently under development and will be completed in phases over the next 5 years.  The full proposal includes a bicycle and pedestrian connection from Downtown Minneapolis to St. Paul as well a new Granary Park situated in and around the historic SEMI Milling and Grain Silo district.
